Simple Sourdough Bread

This classic sourdough bread is made with just a few ingredients. It develops a rich, tangy flavor and a beautifully crisp crust. Perfect for sandwiches, toast, or enjoying on its own with butter!

Instructions

  1. Mix the dough
    • In a large bowl, combine the sourdough starter and warm water. Stir in the flour and salt until a shaggy dough forms. Cover and let rest for 30 minutes.
  2. Stretch & fold
    • Over the next 2 hours, perform 4 sets of “stretch and folds,” every 30 minutes. (Gently stretch one side of the dough upward and fold it over itself, repeating on all four sides.)
  3. Bulk ferment
    • Cover the dough and let it rise at room temperature for 8–12 hours, until doubled in size.
  4. Shape & proof
    • Turn the dough onto a floured surface, shape it into a round, and place it into a floured banneton or bowl. Cover and let it proof for 1–2 more hours.
  5. Preheat & bake
    • Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C) with a Dutch oven inside. When ready, place the dough in the Dutch oven, score the top, and bake covered for 20 minutes. Remove the lid and bake for another 20–25 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Cool & enjoy
    • Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing. Enjoy with butter, jam, or your favorite toppings!
