Our mission is to provide the Cariboo & surrounding region with the authentic flavour of naturally grown strawberries, cultivated with care on our off-grid family farm. Through hand planting, hand weeding, and hand picking, we ensure the highest quality produce—free from herbicides, pesticides, microplastics, and heavy metals. Our vision is to bring wholesome, naturally grown berries to every table, enhancing local communities with sustainable, pure food.
We are primarily focused on strawberries but have future plans to expand our produce—from blackberries and raspberries to nut trees.
Our strawberries were hand-planted June 2024 under the Full Strawberry Moon. Just my wife and I shaped our rows and then hand-planted 5,000 strawberries in 5 days, working most nights until past midnight under the moonlight, taking advantage of our 3 children (3, 2, 0) sleeping.
In 2018, my wife and I (only dating at the time) left an apartment in the Lower Mainland to find a better life—more space and freedom. We moved to a 10-acre property outside 100 Mile and rebuilt an abandoned home by ourselves. We transformed the property and had our wedding there in September 2019, inviting all our family for the celebration. In fall 2020, we met our firstborn child, and then had the opportunity to sell everything we had built and move to an off-grid 93-acre piece of land, with nowhere to live. We left everything for the second time and moved in early 2021, building our own house—cutting the trees and milling the lumber myself. We greeted our second child, born at home on the winter solstice, 21.12.21.
My wife and her mother-in-law opened a ballet studio this year (they previously owned studios in the Lower Mainland), and it became a family business, bringing the love of dance to our community. With the birth of our third child in 2023, we knew we wanted to continue building our family’s legacy and always stay together. We decided to delve more into farming. We had always maintained our own garden for just our family, as well as raised animals for meat and hides. One thing we always thrived with was strawberries—while no one else around seemed able to keep them alive.
Family is everything, and life is too short to spend it apart.
Sustainability, to me, means working in harmony with nature, not against it.
Everything we do is to keep it as natural as possible—from no machinery allowed near the patch, to our hand planting, hand weeding, and hand picking methods. Our fertilizer is hand-mixed using our own organic manure, sawdust from the mill, and wood ash from outdoor fires, etc.
It is the most important thing to me. It allows my children to continue using the land after I am gone, and ensures quality and nutritious berries for the community.
I look forward to working together. We are very excited to begin this chapter of our journey.
Thank you for considering Black Sheep Farms.
We warmly invite you to share this call for vendors, artisans, and farmers with individuals who may be interested in becoming a part of our community-driven initiative.
